Clinical Info
HSV IgM antibody test is used as an aid in diagnosis of primary HSV infection. The test may become positive during HSV reactivation. Cannot exclude recent primary HSV infection if the specimen collected within 7-10 days after onset of signs and symptoms. Non-specific reactivity is not uncommon with HSV IgM serology. Clinical correlation is required.
Clinical Limitation
Performance characteristics have not been established for neonates, infants or on cord blood. False negative result may occur in immunocompromised patients during an active infection. False negative results may occur as HSV specific IgG antibodies may compete with IgM antibodies during the test process. False positive results may occur in patients infected with Epstein-Barr virus.
