Hemostasis & Thrombosis

Laboratory Medicine

Hemostasis & Thrombosis

The Hemostasis & Thrombosis Section offers comprehensive testing for the evaluation of an extensive range of blood disorders.

Our staff specializes in inherited and acquired bleeding disorders, platelet dysfunction, thromboembolic complications, hypercoagulable states, and anticoagulant monitoring.

Hemostasis & Thrombosis

Hemostasis disorders often are clinically puzzling in the rapidly-changing field of hemostasis laboratory testing.

Our experienced staff offers expert interpretation of laboratory results integrated with the patient’s medical and drug history and can provide additional recommendations for further evaluation of patients with hemostasis disorders.

Paired with expert interpretation, readily available consultation from our staff, and our extensive quality control methods, our laboratories ensure safe, expedited handling for each specimen submitted.

Specialized Diagnostic & Consultative Services

Cleveland Clinic Laboratories offers an array of testing for inherited and acquired abnormalities related to the hypercoagulable state.

Our comprehensive testing and interpretative capabilities aid in diagnosing and planning appropriate interventions for patients with recurrent thrombosis.

In consultation with the referring physician, our pathologists can develop a customized testing plan to meet the needs of the patient with a complex or unusual hemostasis disorder.

Core Laboratory Services

In addition to our traditional reference laboratory services, Cleveland Clinic Laboratories offers complete core laboratory services for large, multicenter hemostasis research studies and clinical trials.

Our experience in this area includes site coordination, protocol development, sample kit design and preparation, assay performance, database entry, and data analysis.

Research

Research is regularly conducted on the evaluation and development of state-of-the-art techniques and instrumentation to enhance the diagnosis of hemostasis disorders.

Our research focuses on new diagnostic laboratory tests for monitoring antiplatelet drugs, diagnostic assays for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, determining genetic risk factors for thrombosis and antiplatelet drug resistance, and platelet flow cytometric techniques for diagnosing platelet dysfunction and activation.

Additionally, our laboratories are involved in clinical trials of new antithrombotic agents, hemostatic evaluation of patients with artificial organs, and basic research to investigate the biocompatibility of biomaterials.
