Our Laboratories

Our Laboratories

Specimens are a small but crucial part of a patient’s life.

Laboratory diagnostic testing guides clinical decision-making, ensures timely patient treatment, and improves health outcomes.

Cleveland Clinic Laboratories—the Robert J. Tomsich Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute’s outreach division—enables access to Cleveland Clinic’s integrated reference laboratory services to local, national, and international healthcare providers and organizations.

Whether routine or esoteric, automated or expert-interpreted: every test performed impacts lives.

Importance of the Laboratory

Pathology & Laboratory Medicine are vital in diagnosing, treating, and monitoring disease.

Led by expert physicians and staff, Cleveland Clinic Laboratories applies subspecialized expertise to every test result, interpretation, and diagnosis through integrated approaches and proven best practices.

More than 100 board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologists—paired with hundreds of expertly-trained medical technologists and laboratory technicians—provide essential testing services to guide clinical decision-making for patients worldwide.

With a diverse array of test offerings within a centralized location, our laboratories offer a full suite of services without sacrificing turnaround time or compromising specimen integrity. Centralized data, readily-accessible support, and collaboration between the laboratory and ordering provider ultimately reduce the time to a patient’s diagnosis and treatment.

World-Class Diagnostic Services

To support diagnostic efforts, staff employ leading laboratory technologies—including molecular testing, one of the most extensive immunohistochemical (IHC) and special stain menus in the country, laboratory genetic counseling, and ePathology (telepathology)—to develop accurate, in-depth diagnoses that assist in determining treatment pathways.

Our anatomic pathologists practice in a full subspecialty model with expertise in multiple subspecialties within anatomic pathology. Each subspecialty service regularly conducts consensus review sessions of unique and challenging cases to leverage the diagnostic knowledge of each team member. This approach ensures the evaluation of every specimen by a pathologist with diagnostic expertise within the case’s specific field of pathology.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine has been at the forefront of introducing new testing methods for clinical and research uses at Cleveland Clinic. In addition to providing an ever-expanding menu of tests available for clinical use, Laboratory Medicine provides the facilities and expertise to support translational research projects. Collaborative, multidisciplinary research working groups are functioning alongside clinical departments and the Lerner Research Institute at Cleveland Clinic.

Through close working relationships between our staff and Cleveland Clinic clinicians, our staff and technologists maintain a high level of expertise and understanding of a diagnosis’s clinical and therapeutic aspects.

Commitment to Quality, Research, & Education

Our laboratories are fully accredited and licensed by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and certified according to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).

Cleveland Clinic staff members have authored landmark book chapters in their practice fields and hold advisory positions in professional laboratory societies and organizations. Additionally, staff publish extensively in leading medical journals and frequently serve as guest speakers at premier pathology and clinical courses, conferences, and meetings.

In support of Cleveland Clinic’s mission statement, staff lead research initiatives and work closely alongside researchers within the Lerner Research Institute.
