Special Info
Performing Labs: Special Chemistry, Client Services - Vendor Mayo. Indicate patient fasting hours when possible. Refer to individual tests Carnitine Free & Total, Plasma (CARNPL) and Acylcarnitines, Quantitative, Plasma (ACRNPL). Carnitine, fish oil, and omega-3 supplements affect test results; indicate supplement use on the requisition.
Clinical Info
This test is useful in the evaluation of individuals at risk for a deficiency of free carnitine, which may occur during treatment with valproate, in persons receiving chronic renal dialysis, and in some forms of malnourishment. When combined with the profile of plasma acylcarnitine species, useful in the diagnostic evaluation of individuals suspected of having a disorder of mitochondrial fatty acid beta-oxidation and many genetic disorders of organic acid metabolism. It is also useful for diagnosis of fatty acid oxidation disorders and several organic acidurias, as well as evaluating treatment during follow-up of patients with fatty acid beta-oxidation disorders and several organic acidurias.
