Pathology Consultative Services
Breast Pathology
The Breast Pathology Consultative Service offers a range of comprehensive services for the diagnosis and management of nonneoplastic breast conditions and breast carcinoma.
Our subspecialized breast pathology service regularly handles large volumes of neoplastic and nonneoplastic breast diseases.
To complement the traditional histologic diagnosis of breast cancer, our pathologists also provide interpretation of special studies.

Histology – Immunohistochemistry – Molecular Analysis
In addition to providing diagnoses, Cleveland Clinic Laboratories offers ancillary testing that helps to guide treatment and therapy decision-making. Test offerings include immunohistochemistry for estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PgR), HER2 (ERBB2), androgen receptor (AR), PD-L1 (SP142) for triple-negative breast carcinoma, and mismatch repair protein (MMR) to assess microsatellite stability.
Cleveland Clinic Laboratories features a dedicated FISH lab for HER2 (ERBB2) determination and a molecular oncology laboratory that offers assays for NTRK rearrangements—the results of which may be used to inform larotrectinib therapy—in addition to a 170 Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) panel that includes analysis for PIK3CA—which may be used to inform alpelisib treatment.
