Specimen Requirements

1 mLPlatelet-poor plasmaSodium citrate (Lt. Blue) Frozen, CriticalSee attachment for detailed collection instructions. Do not use needles smaller than 23 gauge. Draw a pilot (light blue) tube and discard before drawing coagulation specimen. Tube must be completely filled. Mix gently by inversion 5-6 times. Centrifuge at 1700 g for 15 minutes or at a speed/time to produce platelet-poor plasma. Immediately remove top 2/3 of platelet-poor plasma and use plastic pipette to transfer 1 mL platelet-poor plasma into a standard plastic aliquot tube. Freeze immediately. Do not use glass vials. Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered.

Clinical Info

Not recommended as an initial test to detect antithrombin (AT) deficiency. Use to determine subtype in AT-deficient individuals.
