Special Info

Specimens that are not processed within 4 hours of collection are not acceptable (whole blood specimens must be centrifuged and all plasma must be removed from the red blood cells). In addition, specimens that are improperly/inadequately labeled or frozen are not acceptable.

Clinical Info

RBC magnesium results reflect the intracellular stores and general homeostasis of magnesium. Results may be falsely low if RBCs in the submitted specimen are lysed or not promptly separated from plasma.
