Clean-Catch Urine Collection Instructions

Clean-catch urine collection is a method of obtaining a urine specimen that is free of most germs that normally are found on the skin of the urinary area.

This method is used for routine urinalysis, urine culture, or other urine tests that require uncontaminated urine for accurate results.

Female Collection Instructions

1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
If menstruating, insert a fresh tampon to stop the flow.

2. Separate the skin folds around the urinary opening.

3. Using the provided towelette, clean the urinary opening and the surrounding areas from front to back.
Discard the used towelette in a wastebasket.

4. Urinate into the toilet for a few seconds, then stop.
Wait until the urine stream is well-established before stopping.

5. Place the empty collection container into the path of the stream.

6. Restart the urine stream and collect it in the sterile container.

7. Tightly screw the cap on the container.
Be sure to avoid touching the inside to prevent contamination.

8. Ensure that the container is labeled with your name and date of birth.

9. Return the collected urine sample to a laboratory employee or to the designated specimen drop-off area.

Male Collection Instructions

1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
If necessary, retract foreskin away from the urinary tract opening.

2. Using the provided towelette, clean the tip of the penis, including the urethral opening.
Discard the used towelette in a wastebasket.

3. Urinate into the toilet for a few seconds, then stop.
Wait until the urine stream is well-established before stopping.

4. Place the empty collection container into the path of the stream.

5. Restart the urine stream and collect it in the sterile container.

6. Tightly screw the cap on the container.
