Clinical Info

This test is used to screen for free monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains (Bence Jones proteins) and to evaluate renal disorders. However, immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) is a more sensitive test for the detection of small M-proteins. A trace of albumin is usually seen in normal patients. Monoclonal free immunoglobulin light chains (Bence Jones proteins) and/or intact immunoglobulins may be seen in multiple myeloma and, much less commonly, in other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders.
